Coles retires after 16 seasons at Miami-Ohio

Mar 6, 2012 - 5:16 AM Oxford, OH (Sports Network) - Charlie Coles announced his retirement as head men's basketball coach at Miami-Ohio after his RedHawks lost in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Monday.

Miami-Ohio's 60-53 loss to Toledo dropped its record to 9-21 and brought an end to Coles' 16-year reign.

Coles posted a school-record 263 wins with the RedHawks and his 218 career conference wins -- which includes a six-year stint as head coach at Central Michigan -- is the most in MAC history.

"Charlie Coles is an iconic figure in the history of Miami University as a student, athlete, server, leader, mentor and coach," said Miami-Ohio athletics director Brad Bates. "He symbolizes all that is noble about the profession of coaching and his entire life has been dedicated to using a basketball curriculum to holistically develop young men. He is leaving an indelible mark on our program, our department and our university and the hundreds of people he has inspired, motivated and developed."

Coles, a 1965 Miami graduate, guided the RedHawks to seven postseason tournaments, including three NCAA bids (1997, 1999 and 2007).
