Georgetown downs No. 11 UCLA

Nov 20, 2012 - 6:32 AM Brooklyn, NY (Sports Network) - Markel Starks had 23 points as Georgetown took down 11th-ranked UCLA, 78-70, in the semifinals of the Progressive Legends Classic.

Otto Porter scored 18 points to go with 11 rebounds and five assists for the Hoyas (3-0), who advanced to face top-ranked Indiana in the tournament final on Tuesday. Greg Whittington added 13 points.

"We were able to get defensive stops and that's what this team has to do," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "We were able to get stops and we were able to get rebounds, and that's what is key."

Jordan Adams had 22 points and six rebounds for the Bruins (3-1), who also got 12 points and eight rebounds from Travis Wear.

Highly touted prospect Shabazz Muhammad made his debut for UCLA in the game and posted 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting along with two assists. He was initially ruled ineligible by the NCAA after it was determined he received nearly $1,600 in impermissible benefits during the recruiting process, but was reinstated after serving a three-game suspension.

Georgetown jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead that was capped on a 3-pointer from Starks 2 1/2 minutes in, but UCLA answered with the next six points to keep it close.

A Larry Drew II jumper followed by a Travis Wear layup gave the Bruins a 24-20 lead, but the Hoyas answered with an 8-2 run to get the lead back and the team took a 31-29 lead into the break.

Georgetown essentially put the game away with a 12-0 run to start the second half that saw consecutive 3-pointers from Whittington and a dunk by Mikael Hopkins to cap the spree for a 43-29 lead just over two minutes in.

UCLA didn't give up and came back with a 15-5 burst to cut the deficit to 48-44 on an Adams jumper with 13 minutes to play and the team was able to keep it close over the next several minutes.

A 9-1 run, though, capped on a Nate Lubick jumper with 6 1/2 minutes to play made it a 66-54 game and UCLA was unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way.

"I think Georgetown has a very good team and they are obviously extremely well coached," Bruins coach Ben Howland said. "Their experience hurt us."

Game Notes

Lubick posted 11 points and five rebounds in the win ... Georgetown shot a blistering 54.5 percent in the game, but was outrebounded, 40-31 ... UCLA made just 40.9 percent of its shots ... This was the second meeting between these two teams. UCLA won the other matchup, 71-70, in 2003.
