Baylor hands No. 8 Kentucky its 2nd straight loss
Dec 1, 2012 - 10:48 PM Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Pierre Jackson had 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, as the Baylor Bears took down eighth-ranked Kentucky, 64-55, ending the Wildcats' 54-game winning streak at Rupp Arena.Isaiah Austin and A.J. Walton added 11 points apiece for the Bears (5-2), who avenged a loss to these Wildcats in the Elite Eight of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. With Saturday's victory, Baylor improved to 1-7 all-time against Kentucky.
"Coming into the game we knew that they had the longest winning streak at home, so that was a big factor, but mainly we just wanted to get some revenge from last year," Austin said. "They knocked our guys out of the Elite Eight, and we wanted to come out strong and show people that our two losses at the beginning of the season don't mean anything. We're still a powerhouse (program.)"
Brady Heslip and Cory Jefferson each tallied 10 points for the Bears, who recorded the school's first non-conference road win against a ranked opponent.
Archie Goodwin ended with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats (4-3), who failed to bounce back from a loss to Notre Dame on Thursday.
"I'm not mad. It's just a learning stage and a learning process," Goodwin said. "Better to lose early than late. We can do all of this now. But it's really going to matter in March."
Trailing by eight, 17-9, just prior to the midway point of the first half, Baylor went on an 11-2 run to take the lead. Jefferson's slam started the clip and Jackson's 3-pointer ended it to give the Bears a 20-19 edge.
Kentucky briefly went back in front before Baylor went on a 7-0 flurry. Jefferson's two free throws, Heslip's 3-pointer and Walton's layup made it a 29-26 contest with two minutes to go.
Heslip added a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Bears a 34-29 margin at the break.
The Wildcats cut their deficit to three with a 6-0 spurt midway through the second half. Goodwin's free throw and slam was followed by Julius Mays' 3- pointer, cutting the gap to 49-46 with 8:23 left.
Jackson responded with a three-point play. He added two free throws with four minutes remaining to make it a 60-52 contest.
Kentucky never got closer than five the rest of the way.
