Wright, No.11 Cincinnati drop Marshall

Dec 16, 2012 - 5:47 AM Charleston, WV (Sports Network) - Cashmere Wright posted 14 points to help No. 11 Cincinnati stay undefeated with a 72-56 win over Marshall.

Sean Kilpatrick had 13 points and six rebounds while Justin Jackson gave 10 points for the Bearcats (10-0), who have won their past three games by double- digits.

"I was able to get in the second half and make shots for my team, rebound the ball and (play) defense," Kilpatrick said. "That's something we preach about every day. Defense wins games on the road."

D.D. Scarver had 20 points as did Elijah Pittman for the Thundering Herd (6-5), who have lost two of their last three.

Marshall used the long ball early to get on the board, with their first 12 points coming off of 3-pointers.

However, the fourth bucket didn't come until nearly nine minutes in, when the Herd's Tamron Manning buried a trey to cut Cincinnati's lead to 15-12.

The Bearcats continued to stay in front the rest of the half, though never leading by less than three points, and took a 29-25 edge into the break.

A 7-0 spurt in the second half allowed Cincinnati to create some distance, with Wright capping the run with a 3-pointer for a 46-35 lead with 13 1/2 minutes to play.

Marshall got it back to eight later on after D.D. Scarver hit a 3-pointer to make it a 56-48 contest, but Kilpatrick hit a 3-ball and a layup sandwiched around a basket from teammate Jermaine Sanders layup to give Cincinnati a 63-48 lead with under seven minutes to play.

The Thundering Herd never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

"We were inept offensively," Marshall coach Tom Herrion admitted. "We were not able to get into any flow or rhythm offensively. Twenty turnovers are going to cause a problem any night."

Game Notes

Cincinnati holds a 20-12 lead in the series with Marshall ... Cincinnati hosts Xavier on Wednesday ... This was the Bearcats' first true road game of the season ... The Bearcats shot 45.3 percent in the game, while the Thundering Herd made just 39.5 percent of their shots ... Marshall played the game without leading scorer DeAndre Kane, who has an injury to his shooting hand. The guard is averaging 15 points per game and is second in the nation in assists per game at 8.5.
