Pangos helps No. 6 Gonzaga pound Pepperdine
Feb 8, 2013 - 7:08 AM Spokane, WA (Sports Network) - Kevin Pangos made four of the Bulldogs' dozen 3-pointers, as No. 6 Gonzaga rolled to its 24th straight victory over Pepperdine with an 82-56 drubbing at McCarthey Athletic Center.Pangos had a team-high 14 points, while Kelly Olynyk scored nine of his 13 points from the foul line as the Bulldogs (22-2, 9-0 WCC) stayed undefeated in West Coast Conference play with a fifth straight win.
Gonzaga forced 21 turnovers and limited the Waves (10-13, 2-8) to 36 percent shooting in the wire-to-wire rout.
"I loved our defensive intensity," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. "We did a great job of buying in. We played with effort and passion on the defensive end."
Stacy Davis recorded team-highs of 16 points and nine rebounds in a fourth consecutive setback.
Pepperdine missed its first six shots and did not score until a Davis bucket with just over 15 minutes left in the half. Gonzaga ripped off the first 10 points and led 16-2 after Przemek Karnowski's putback.
Nikolas Skouen bookended an 8-1 run with 3-pointers to pull the Waves within 17-10, but Drew Barham and Gary Bell quickly responded with deep makes of their own to push the margin back to double digits.
Gonzaga held the Waves to 27 percent shooting in the first half and held a 35-20 edge at the break. It was still a 15-point game before a quick 8-0 run -- coming on 3-pointers by Barham and Pangos followed by a layup from Olynyk -- stretched the margin to 55-32 with under 12 minutes to play.
Olynyk was able to sit the rest of the way with the game already in hand.
