Pangos, Olynyk help No. 6 Gonzaga down LMU

Feb 10, 2013 - 6:07 AM Spokane, WA (Sports Network) - Kevin Pangos and Kelly Olynyk each netted 20 points with sharp shooting performances and No. 6 Gonzaga continued its recent dominance at home over Loyola Marymount with a 74-55 victory on Saturday.

Pangos knocked down 7-of-11 from the field -- including 4-of-7 from three- point range -- while Olynyk missed just one of his eight attempts from the field to help the Bulldogs (23-2, 10-0 WCC) stay unscathed in conference play and notch their 23rd straight win over the Lions in Spokane.

Elias Harris put forth a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the Bulldogs' sixth consecutive victory.

"It was a good, solid, methodical win," said Gonzaga coach Mark Few. "We played great half-court defense."

Anthony Ireland was the sole source of offense for the Lions (8-16, 1-10), who shot a brutal 29.8 percent in dropping their eighth straight contest. He finished with 30 points in defeat.

"You better believe depth played a factor tonight," said LMU coach Max Good. "You have to have at least 10 players to be able to compete up here. I have the utmost respect for Gonzaga and this program. They are very, very good."

Loyola Marymount shot an even worse 22.6 percent in the first half, but thanks to 15 points from Ireland, only trailed by 11 at the break. However, Gonzaga came out of the locker room and quickly put the contest out of reach.

After Ashley Hamilton hit a 3-pointer for the Lions to open the second stanza, the Bulldogs ran off with an 18-6 surge, which featured triples from Pangos and Gary Bell Jr. to push the Bulldogs' advantage to 54-34.

Ireland shot a respectable 8-for-20 for the night while also adding 12 free throws, but his supporting cast shot a combined 9-of-37 from the field and the Lions never got closer than 16 points the rest of the way.

After holding just a 19-17 lead through the first 10 minutes, the Bulldogs created some separation when they closed out the half on a 17-8 run. Olynyk tallied 10 points during the stretch and helped send Gonzaga into the break with a 36-25 advantage.
