Burke helps Michigan edge rival MSU

Mar 4, 2013 - 2:13 AM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Trey Burke racked up 21 points with eight assists and notched two of his five steals in the final 30 seconds to help No. 4 Michigan hold off ninth-ranked Michigan State, 58-57, on Sunday at Crisler Center.

With 26 seconds left, Burke took the ball from Keith Appling and threw down a two-handed jam, which turned out to be the deciding basket. He then deflected a pass and came up with the game-ending steal on Michigan State's final possession to secure the win.

"He was incredible," said Michigan coach John Beilein. "All of a sudden, I took my eyes off him for a second to see their formation, and there's Trey going down the other end. So he's very good at that, that was huge and his defense on the last play was excellent."

Michigan (24-5, 11-5 Big Ten), which was coming off an inexcusable loss to conference dweller Penn State on Wednesday, received 11 points from Mitch McGary and eight apiece from Glenn Robinson III and Caris LeVert in the triumph.

Adreian Payne totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to help the Spartans (22-7, 11-5) avoid their third straight defeat. Gary Harris added 16 points in the setback, which helped conference-leading Indiana clinch at least a share of the Big Ten title.

"We did some really good things, but unfortunately good isn't good enough in this league," said Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. "It wasn't even close to good enough on the road, so we're going to have to lick our wounds. They earned the victory and we have to regroup."

Michigan State dominated most of the first half, but came out completely flat to start the second stanza before falling behind by as many as 10 points in the final five minutes.

However, Harris and Payne combined for the first 11 points of a 13-3 Spartans surge, with Appling's free throws tying the contest at 56-56 with under a minute to play.

Michigan State had a chance to go ahead after McGary stepped out of bounds under the Wolverines basket, but Burke never let the visitors get much further than half court.

He salvaged the turnover by picking Appling's pocket and taking it all the way to the hoop for an uncontested dunk and a 58-56 Michigan advantage with 17.7 seconds to play.

Derrick Nix drew a foul underneath the hoop on the Spartans' ensuing possession, but he only hit 1-of-2 from the line, keeping Michigan State behind by one.

The Spartans had one last opportunity after McGary bricked the first of a 1- and-1 from the free throw line, but Burke's steal in the final seconds prevented the comeback.

Michigan State started the contest 5-for-9 from 3-point range, with Payne hitting a pair early before Harris' triple staked the Spartans to a 27-22 lead with 5:50 to play in the first half.

After falling behind by seven with just over a minute remaining in the half, the Wolverines trailed just 31-28 at the break after scores from Burke and Levert, which helped create some momentum.

Michigan began the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 36-31 lead and forced the Spartans into seven turnovers 10 minutes through the final stanza. The Wolverines then put together a 10-3 run to grab a 52-42 lead on Burke's free throws.

Game Notes

The Wolverines improved to 17-0 this season at Crisler Center. Their final home game will occur March 10 when they host Indiana ... Michigan was 0-for-12 from 3-point range ... Burke became just the fourth player in Wolverines history to record 200-plus assists in a season ... Michigan State had 18 turnovers compared to the Wolverines' seven ... The Spartans had won 20 of the last 26 meetings with Michigan coming in.
