UTSA extends Thompson through 2016-17
Jul 27, 2013 - 12:24 AM San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - UTSA head men's basketball coach Brooks Thompson agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the Roadrunners through the 2016-17 season.Thompson took over the program in 2006 after two seasons as an assistant at Arizona State. In 2010-11, UTSA won the Southland Conference Tournament and registered its first-ever NCAA postseason victory in any sport, an opening round victory over Alabama State in the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, their first and only in the Western Athletic Conference, the Roadrunners finished 9-21, including 3-14 in the conference. UTSA joined Conference USA earlier this month.
"We are very appreciative of the job Brooks has done for this program," said UTSA Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey. "When he arrived, he was faced with a tremendous challenge and he and his staff have turned things around both on and off the court. When you look at the things he has done with our APR and graduation rate and then see the quality and high character of the student- athletes he has brought to UTSA, we wanted to show support in return. Our recent conference moves have created another tremendous challenge for men's basketball and this extension provides stability that is deserved as we enter a very competitive league in Conference USA."
Over seven seasons, the Roadrunners have gone 103-111 with Thompson as their head coach. The 43-year-old Thompson has a 162-128 career record, including a two-year stint with Yavapai Community College.
Thompson played in the NBA with the Magic (1994-96), Jazz (1996), Nuggets (1996-1997), Suns (1997-98) and Knicks (1998). averaging 4.5 points and 1.7 assists per game. He was the 27th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft.
