Parker and Duke beat up UNC-Asheville

Nov 19, 2013 - 4:48 AM Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jabari Parker recorded his second straight double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and No. 6 Duke beat UNC-Asheville 91-55 in the first round of the Preseason NIT on Monday night.

Rodney Hood scored 18 points and Andre Dawkins added 13 for the Blue Devils (3-1), who have won two in a row since last Tuesday's loss to Kansas.

Duke fell two spots in the new Associated Press poll released earlier Monday but pushed its NCAA-best non-conference home winning streak to 104 games.

"They gave us a good game for a mid-major opponent," said Parker. "I think we played well for what they had and what they gave us."

The Blue Devils will host East Carolina in the Preseason NIT East final on Tuesday with the winner moving on to play the South champion next Wednesday in the semifinals at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

East Carolina beat Norfolk in the nightcap Monday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Sam Hughes had 16 points and David Robertson scored 12 for the Bulldogs (1-3), who were coming off their first win of the season Friday over the College of Charleston after opening with losses to then-No. 1 Kentucky and Western Carolina.

Andrew Rowsey, UNC-Asheville's leading scorer, was held to two points in 33 minutes. Rowsey, who came in averaging 19.7 points per game, was guarded by Quinn Cook most of the game.

"He did a great job," Hood said of Cook. "A lot of times we denied our man and let him play one-on-one, even though we knew (Rowsey) was their best player."

Rowsey finished 1-for-7 from the floor and missed all three of his 3-point tries. He had three assists, but just two turnovers.

"I think he played pretty well even though he didn't score a lot of points," said Bulldogs coach Nick McDevitt.

Duke had a 26-10 lead 7 1/2 minutes into the game, the last 10 points coming in rapid succession sparked by Tyler Thornton's right-corner 3 six minutes in.

Cook scored layups after a pair of steals -- Parker hit him with a nice outlet pass after a swipe -- and Dawkins' 3 from the high left side gave the Blue Devils their 16-point lead.

They pushed it to 20 points on a Hood 3-pointer with under four minutes left in the first half and another Dawkins 3 before the buzzer made it 48-28 at the break.

Hood scored 15 points in the first half and Parker had 14. The Blue Devils went 8-for-15 on 3s in the first half and were 10-of-23 in the game. They shot 57.4 percent overall and led by as many as 37 points down the stretch.

Parker also had 21 points and 10 rebounds for his first college double-double in last Friday's win over Florida Atlantic. The freshman is averaging 22.8 points and 8.8 rebounds in his first four games. Hood, who sat out last year after transferring from Mississippi State, is averaging 19.8 points.

Game Notes

Parker was whistled for a Flagrant 1 foul in the first half after his elbow made contact with a player's face as he positioned himself near the baseline beside the basket ... Duke hasn't lost at home to a non-ACC opponent since falling to St. John's on Feb. 26, 2000.
