No. 21 Iowa State edges BYU

Nov 21, 2013 - 6:36 AM Provo, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane both contributed 21 points as the No. 21 Iowa State Cyclones edge the BYU Cougars, 90-88, at Mariott Center.

Down 89-87, Anson Winder went to the foul line for BYU with 24.7 remaining. He missed the first shot, but made the second. After blocking Tyler Haws' shot, Daniel Edozie went to the line with 3.2 seconds left. After missing the first shot, he banked in the second attempt to give the Cyclones a two-point lead. BYU went down the court and Kyle Collinsworth missed a jumper to end the game.

"Daniel (Edozie) makes a heck of a defensive play and banks a free throw, which was pretty important," Iowa State head coach Fred Hoiberg said. "Just a really gutty effort by our guys and not many teams walk out of here with a victory and that's a great one for our program."

Kane also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. Geoges Niang added 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds as Iowa State (4-0) stayed perfect.

Haws scored 20 points, making 7-of-8 free throws, while Matt Carlino had 19 points, four steals, seven assists and four rebounds. In six all-time meetings between the two teams, BYU (4-1) has never won.

"I thought it was a hard fought battle and both teams really gave a great effort," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "We had quite a few chances there at the end to make a few plays and win the game, but it just seemed like they were a little bit better in their execution late in the game."

Kane tied the game at 75 at the 6:40 mark of the second. After a tip-in from Nate Austin, a 3-pointer from Matt Thomas sparked a 7-0 run that gave Iowa State 82-77 lead with 4:29 to go.

Kane received a flagrant foul after hitting Eric Mika in the face and was ejected with 3:28 in the second. Haws made both free throws before BYU got the ball back. Haws got the ball on the inbounds pass and was fouled. He made both shots again to pull BYU within one, 82-81.

Niang drained two jumpers to give Iowa State a 86-81 lead with a little over two minutes remaining.

Carlino drained three straight jumpers on a 10-2 run that put BYU ahead, 25-18, at the midway mark of the first half.

Ejim answered back with two consecutive 3-pointers to highlight a 10-0 Iowa State run late in the first half to pull within one. Haws and Carlino made jumpers to allow BYU to take a 47-42 lead into the half.
