Shockers stifle Cougars to claim CBE Hall of Fame Classic crown
Nov 27, 2013 - 6:58 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred VanVleet scored 10 of his 12 points in the final six minutes to push No. 12 Wichita State past an evenly-matched BYU, 75-62, in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic championship game.Ron Baker poured in a career-high 23 points and Cleanthony Early netted 12 for the Shockers (7-0), who stayed undefeated by holding the Cougars to 30 percent shooting.
"I was happy that we could come out with a win and a championship here in Kansas City and when you hold a team like that to 26 points (in the second half) it's a minor miracle," Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall said.
Matt Carlino had a team-high 21 points but scored just three in the second half as BYU (5-2) went the final 8 1/2 minutes without making a field goal. Tyler Haws scored 11 of his 17 points at the foul line, hitting just 3-of-15 from the field to sum up the Cougars' offensive struggles.
"These are hard games for us to win when we're not shooting the ball well," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "I was really proud of the guys for how they hung in there in a tough situation. Sometimes when you don't score you can see it on the guys faces as far as the effort they give on the defensive end and we didn't really see a lot of that tonight. These guys hung in there and fought and we just came up a few points short."
Large swings in the first half gave way to a tight second.
The biggest lead for either team after the break was four until just before the final television timeout.
The Shockers only made 6-of-28 shots (21 percent) from 3-point range, but two came from VanVleet during a late 10-4 Wichita State run. VanVleet's second in that stretch provided a 62-57 lead with 3 1/2 minutes to go.
Carlino had a chance to tie with the Cougars down 64-61 a little later, but his 3-point attempt did not fall. VanVleet put in another jumper at the other end, and after a jump ball was awarded to the Shockers, Darius Carter essentially put the game away with a bucket inside.
The Shockers missed 13 of their first 15 shots and found themselves down 19-6 seven minutes into the game, but BYU hit its own rough patch and watched an 11-0 Wichita State run trim its lead to two points.
A Baker 3-pointer with 6 1/2 minutes left in the half gave the Shockers a 24-23 lead, and Frank Bartley IV's late make from behind the arc gave the Cougars a tight 36-34 edge at halftime.
