Pangos' hot shooting helps No. 11 Gonzaga beat Arkansas
Nov 28, 2013 - 1:16 AM Maui, HI (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Pangos poured in a career-high 34 points, missing just one of his eight 3-point attempts, and No. 11 Gonzaga beat Arkansas 91-81 on Wednesday in the Maui Invitational's fifth-place game.Pangos hit consecutive 3s and Sam Dower Jr. followed with a 3 for a quick 9-0 run that gave Gonzaga a 75-57 lead with 6:14 left.
The Bulldogs (6-1) led comfortably the rest of the way to post a 2-1 record in Maui with a loss to Dayton on Monday and a victory over Chaminade on Tuesday.
Dower finished with 19 points and Gary Bell Jr. scored 13.
Bobby Portis had 18 points to lead Arkansas (4-2), Alandise Harris scored 17 and Michael Qualls added 13. The Razorbacks lost two of three in Maui, falling to California on Monday and topping Minnesota on Tuesday.
Pangos was 10-of-15 from the field overall and had three rebounds and four assists.
After watching Pangos make almost all of this 3-pointers, Arkansas coach Mike Anderson started his postgame press conference with plaudits for the junior guard.
"You have to take your hat off to Pangos," said Anderson. "This guy played 39 minutes and it seemed like he played perfect basketball. ... But I won't take anything away from our guys. We gave great effort."
Gonzaga coach Mark Few said the Bulldogs were looking forward to a day at the beach on Thursday and a Thanksgiving dinner together before heading home. When they get back, there are a couple of things Few would like to work on as the team gets ready to play Coppin State on Sunday.
Shooting isn't one of them.
"Our defense needs to be better and our rebounding needs to be better," Few said. "(But) our offense is probably as good as anyone's in the country."
No kidding.
The Bulldogs shot 54.5 percent from the field against Arkansas, down from a season average of 57 percent coming in.
They never trailed after a Dower jumper gave them a 4-2 lead. Later in the first half, Pangos hit a 3-pointer and finished a 12-2 run with a layup to make it 30-17.
Gonzaga took a 38-31 lead into halftime but didn't pull away to their 9-0 run late. The Bulldogs led by as many as 19 after that.
