Kansas State beats No. 21 Gonzaga

Dec 22, 2013 - 1:06 AM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Foster scored 14 points to help lead Kansas State to a 72-62 victory over No. 21 Gonzaga in the Wichita Wildcat Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Thomas Gipson also scored 14 and Wesley Iwundu chipped in 13 points for Kansas State (8-3), which has won six straight.

"It was just a great team win and hopefully it is something that they can enjoy but then also build on as we continue into our march in December," said Kansas State coach Bruce Weber.

Kevin Pangos paced Gonzaga (10-2) with 14 points and Drew Barham added 13 points. Przemek Karnowski and David Stockton both contributed 10 points for the Bulldogs, who had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Despite shooting 34.6 percent from the floor in the first half (9-for-26), Kansas State scored the final five points on a 3 by Nigel Johnson and a layup by Nino Williams for a 29-24 lead.

Gonzaga led for just under two minutes around the midway point in the second half. After Pangos delivered a layup with nine minutes to go to put the Bulldogs ahead by one, the Wildcats went on a 15-2 run to open up the game.

"We took the lead there for a little bit in the second half, but we just could not get enough stops. We could not make enough plays on offense to get us over the hump," said Gonzaga coach Mark Few.

Gipson's putback with 1:58 to go pushed the Wildcats lead to eight and they went 8-for-10 from the line during the last minute to secure the win.

Gonzaga entered the contest averaging 87.5 points per game and shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range. Kansas State held the Bulldogs to just 33.3 percent shooting on 3s.
