Memphis outlasts Jackson State

Dec 28, 2013 - 9:02 PM Memphis, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Dixon Jr. had 14 points and 17th- ranked Memphis beat Jackson State by a 75-61 margin on Saturday.

Shaq Goodwin added 13 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals for Memphis (9-2), which has won two in a row. David Pellom and Joe Jackson tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively.

"It was a good win out there today. We did not play the entire game well, but I am happy for the win," Memphis coach Josh Pastner said. "We were up by 19 points early on in the game, and then we just coasted there in the end."

Julysses Nobles ended with 20 points for Jackson State (4-8), which had a two- game winning streak snapped. Brandon West had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

It didn't take long for Memphis to build a big lead. Chris Crawford made a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 16-4 run.

Crawford added a pair of free throws with 5:37 left in the first half to give Memphis a 33-14 edge. It was a 40-28 game at the break.

Jackson State actually got within nine, 41-32, early in the second half, but Memphis responded with a 12-0 run.

"I thought Memphis had a really good team. I thought they were well-coached, big, strong and athletic. They trapped us with some guys that had great size," Jackson State coach Wayne Brent said.

Memphis leads the all-time series by a 15-1 margin ... Crawford ended with eight points, seven rebounds and seven steals ... Memphis went 19-of-32 from the foul line, while Jackson State went 9-of-17 from the charity stripe.
