No. 7 SDSU routs San Jose State

Jan 23, 2014 - 5:46 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Xavier Thames scored a game-high 15 points in seventh-ranked San Diego State's 75-50 drubbing of San Jose State on Wednesday.

Winston Shepard and Skylar Spencer added 12 points apiece, with Shepard also contributing nine rebounds and six assists in the Aztecs' (17-1, 6-0 MWC) 16th-straight triumph. The lone blemish on the season came against No. 1 Arizona on Nov. 14.

Devante Wilson had 14 points for the Spartans (6-13, 0-7), losers of seven straight on the heels of a four-game winning streak.

SDSU led from start to finish in this one. Josh Davis, who had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, made a layup from Shepard to open the scoring. Neither team shot well in the early going, but Thames converted consecutive three- point plays and Matt Shrigley added a layup for a 13-5 SDSU edge just over seven minutes in.

The Spartans didn't reach double figures until Rashad Muhammad's triple at 7:56, which made it 16-10 in favor of the visiting Aztecs. The lead stood at 29-19 at halftime.

Isaac Thornton's layup made it 35-30 2 1/2 minutes into the second half before J.J. O'Brien's layup sparked 16 straight SDSU points to run away with it.
