Maryland upsets No. 5 Virginia in OT
Mar 9, 2014 - 9:46 PM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Layman made some clutch free throws as the Terrapins needed overtime to upset the fifth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers by a 75-69 margin. It was Maryland's final regular season game in the ACC, with the Terrapins moving to the Big Ten next season.
"Today wasn't just an ordinary game. You can tell by all the cameras in here. You can tell by the fans. There were a lot of things," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said. "It was our last ACC game. Our last regular season game. [It was] senior day. We were playing a top-5 team in the country who already wrapped our league up and is just a tremendous team. We always play for Maryland, but today we played for former players and former coaches and all our fans."
Layman went 4-of-4 from the foul line in the final 38.4 seconds of overtime for the Terrapins (17-14, 9-9 ACC). He ended with 10 points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field.
Seth Allen ended with 20 points for Maryland, which had lost six straight against Virginia. Dez Wells tallied 18 points.
Anthony Gill had 15 points for the Cavaliers (25-6, 16-2), who had a 13-game winning streak snapped. London Perrantes made four 3-pointers en route to 14 points.
Virginia had already won the regular season title and was trying to set an ACC record for most league wins during the regular season.
Gill made two free throws with 1:02 left in regulation to pull Virginia within one, 62-61. The Cavaliers then had a chance to take the lead after Layman missed from beyond the arc.
Following a timeout with 5.4 seconds remaining, Joe Harris was called for an offensive foul while setting a screen along the baseline. Layman made two free throws at the other end to give Maryland a 64-61 lead.
The Terrapins decided to send Malcolm Brogdon to the foul line with 2.8 ticks left on the clock. Virginia called timeout after Brogdon made the first shot. He intentionally missed the second and the ball hit off a Maryland player before going out of bounds. Gill then received the inbounds pass and made a short jumper to tie the game with 0.5 seconds to go.
"We just put that in last week during practice," Gill said. "We executed it well. It worked out for us."
Allen scored the first five points of the extra session to give Maryland a 69-64 edge. The Cavaliers got within two, but Layman's clutch performance at the line secured the victory for the Terrapins.
Earlier, Virginia jumped out to a 14-5 lead, but Maryland responded with a 16-4 run to go in front.
The remainder of the first half was close and the Cavaliers took a 35-34 edge into the locker room.
Maryland started the second half on an 11-2 run, but Virginia fought back and eventually took the lead on Harris' 3-pointer with 8 1/2 minutes left.
