No. 16 SDSU beats Bakersfield 51-27

Nov 21, 2014 - 5:57 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - No. 16 San Diego State limited Cal State Bakersfield to 12 points in the first half and grinded out a 51-27 victory on an offensively-challenged Thursday at Viejas Arena.

The Aztecs (3-0) only made 24.6 percent of their shots but put on a show defensively.

Bakersfield was held scoreless over the first 12:18, made just 21.4 percent from the field, including 1-for-20 from behind the arc, and committed 23 turnovers in the forgettable setback.

Dwayne Polee II led SDSU with 13 points.

There were no double-digit scorers for Bakersfield (0-4), which was coming off three straight losses at the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu. Kevin Mays paced the club with six points and 10 rebounds.

The Roadrunners missed an astonishing 20 shots in a row before Brent Wrapp scored inside with 7:42 remaining in the first half to finally get them on the board.

They somehow only trailed 12-0 at the time because of SDSU's slow start, and the two limped into the break with the Aztecs leading 22-12.

The slow start was nothing new for the Aztecs, who scored just 17 first-half points in Tuesday's win over nationally-ranked Utah.

They continued struggling out of the break with misses on their first eight shots, and the Roadrunners pulled within six, 22-16, on a Jaylin Airington layup.

SDSU scored 12 of the next 14 points, the last five coming from Dakarai Allen, to take control.

After Mays scored off the offensive glass to cut the deficit to 41-24, Bakersfield went the next nine minutes without scoring before Cortez Conners made a transition 3-pointer in the closing seconds.
