No. 9 UVA cruises past GW

Nov 22, 2014 - 6:18 AM Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Anderson scored 18 points with eight rebounds to guide No. 9 Virginia to a 59-42 win over George Washington on Friday.

Malcolm Brogdon had 15 points and five boards while Darion Atkins gave eight points and 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers (4-0), who have posted double-digit victories in each of their four games this season.

Kethan Savage had 13 points and Yuta Watanabe gave 10 points and five rebounds for the Colonials (2-1), who posted wins over Grambling State and Rutgers to start the season.

George Washington led by as many as seven in the first half and Watanabe's layup to close the scoring in the first 20 minutes saw the team take a 26-22 lead into the break.

"We struggled to score obviously, but I thought we controlled the tempo and did a pretty good job defensively," said George Washington head coach Mike Lonergan. "I think our lack of scoring got to us."

Virginia, though, opened the second half with a 14-2 surge as Anthony Gill's jumper gave the team the lead for good and Mike Tobey's layup six minutes in gave the team a 36-28 advantage.

"What I did like was to be able to bounce back and in the second half have a bit more patience, try to get inside, touch the paint and sustain a little more defensively," said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett.

George Washington kept it close over the next several minutes, but the Cavaliers used a 7-0 run to put the game away as Atkin's tip of an Anderson miss made it a 53-37 game with just 3 1/2 to play.
