SMU tops Eastern Washington to end skid

Nov 23, 2014 - 7:50 AM Dallas, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Nic Moore scored 22 points and Keith Frazier added 17, leading 22nd-ranked SMU back into the win column with a 77-68 triumph over previously unbeaten Eastern Washington.

Yanick Moreira chipped in 13 points for the Mustangs (2-2), who were coming off tough losses at Gonzaga and Indiana earlier this week.

Tyler Harvey scored 24 points and Venky Jois contributed 13 with 10 rebounds for Eastern Washington (3-1), which had wins over Texas Southern, Utah Valley and Walla Walla to open its season.

Eastern Washington kept it close early and grabbed a 10-9 lead on a free throw by Jois, but Moore followed with a 3-pointer to ignite a 15-2 SMU run. Moreira scored five during the burst, capping it with a layup for a 24-12 SMU edge.

The Eagles again clawed back and drew within 24-21 on a three by Felix Von Hofe midway through the first half, but the Mustangs stayed in front and led by as many as 10 late before taking a 43-35 margin to the break.

A Jois layup to start the second half made it a six-point game, but the Mustangs followed with the next six to restore a double-digit advantage and a dunk by Frazier with just under 15 minutes left gave SMU a 56-39 cushion.

Eastern Washington made it somewhat interesting late when a triple by Harvey with 93 seconds to play pulled the Eagles within 71-66, but Moore drained four straight free throws around a Harvey miss from beyond the arc to ice it.
