Staten, WVU crush Wofford

Dec 23, 2014 - 6:29 AM Morgantown, WV ( - Juwan Staten tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds as No. 18 West Virginia rolled over Wofford, 77-44, on Monday.

West Virginia's full-court pressure was too much for Wofford in the early going. The Mountaineers forced five turnovers during an 18-2 start.

Jonathan Holton and Jaysean Paige both hit 3-pointers during the run, which stretched more than seven minutes.

Holton and Elijah Macon scored 11 points apiece for the Mountaineers (11-1), who forced 21 turnovers for the game.

"We've lost the last few years before Christmas and I've been absolutely miserable," said WVU coach Bob Huggins. "They have been great."

Jevon Carter netted 10 points, Paige and Gary Browne both had nine and West Virginia connected on 19-of-23 from the free throw line.

Spencer Collins and Karl Cochran were the lone Terriers to reach double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Wofford (9-3) stumbled out of the gate and never really threatened, finishing an abysmal 11-for-41 from the field.

"They're very good, very good in areas I was worried about," said Wofford coach Mike Young.

Wofford, which had won four straight and nine of its last 10 games, only made five field goals in the first half and trailed 42-20 at the break.

WVU's defense made another statement in the opening stages of the first half, holding Wofford without a field goal until Collins' 3-pointer at 13:32.

That cut the deficit to 51-25, but Carter countered with a jumper that sparked an 11-0 run.

The spread reached 40 with just under four minutes to play.
