VCU holds off Davidson

Jan 8, 2015 - 7:27 AM Richmond, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Treveon Graham had 15 points and 10 rebounds to guide No. 20 VCU to a 71-65 victory over Davidson on Wednesday.

Terry Larrier and Melvin Johnson each gave 11 points, while Briante Weber had four points, four rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Rams (12-3, 2-0 A-10), who have won their past seven.

"Both teams really battled and played with a lot of spirit," VCU head coach Shaka Smart said. "Over the course of the game, we did enough to come up with the win."

Brian Sullivan scored 19 points, Tyler Kalinoski gave 16 with nine rebounds and six assists, and Jack Gibbs had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats (10-3, 1-1), who have dropped two of their last three.

"Despite the loss, this was great basketball," Davidson head coach Bob McKillop said. "When you play teams as a conference opponent, the inspiration and the energy that accompanies conference play far exceeds that of non-conference play."

VCU held a 69-57 lead after Johnson put in a 3-pointer with just over two minutes to play, but Kalinoski followed with a 3-pointer and a layup to cut the deficit to seven.

After Graham hit a pair of free throws, Kalinoski missed a 3 at the other end before Weber missed a free throw.

Following turnovers from each side, Sullivan made another 3-pointer, but it was in the final moments of the game as VCU held on for the win.

VCU led most of the game and held a 38-32 advantage after Graham put in a layup inside the final minute of the first half, but Jordan Barham tipped in a shot to make it a 38-34 game at the break.

The Rams held their first double-digit lead of the game with just over 11 minutes to play after Larrier's 3-pointer gave the team a 52-41 advantage.
