No. 22 Dayton edges Richmond
Jan 25, 2015 - 2:53 AM Dayton, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Dyshawn Pierre scored 21 points and 22nd- ranked Dayton survived a challenge from Richmond to earn a 63-60 victory in an Atlantic 10 clash.Kendall Pollard added 14 points, including a clutch hook shot with 2:16 remaining that snapped a 55-55 tie. Dayton (16-3, 6-1 A-10) stayed in front the rest of the way to avoid a second straight conference loss and extend its home win streak to 16 games.
Richmond (10-9, 3-3) was able to overcome a 37-27 halftime deficit to hold a slim lead with three minutes left, but couldn't hold it down the stretch en route to a 10th consecutive road defeat.
T.J. Cline netted 10 of his 14 points in the second half for the Spiders, with Terry Allen, ShawnDre' Jones and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa each finishing with 11 points in the loss.
The Flyers, coming off a 77-60 setback at Davidson that halted a string of eight straight wins, shot a torrid 68.2 percent for the first half but struggled mightily in the second to enable Richmond to get back in it.
Jones' 3-pointer with 4:47 to go gave the Spiders a 55-53 lead, but Richmond didn't score again for more than three minutes. After hitting two free throws that pulled Dayton even, Pollard sank a contested jump hook on the ensuing possession and Jordan Sibert drained a pair of foul shots following a Spiders' turnover to put the Flyers up 59-55 with 1:54 left.
Kendall Anthony weaved through for a layup with 41.5 seconds remaining to bring Richmond within 59-58, but the Flyers' Kyle Davis drove the baseline for a tough reverse layup on the other end to restore the three-point margin.
The teams then traded free throws before Jones' 3-point try just prior to the buzzer came up short.
Richmond was able to get out of its halftime hole by limiting the Flyers to a 6-of-22 shooting display after intermission and receiving a big lift from Cline, who tallied every point during a 10-0 run that turned a 46-37 deficit into a narrow advantage with just under 11 minutes remaining. The lead would change hands five more times before the final buzzer.
Pierre was the star of the first half, racking up 16 points for the period and leading a 7-0 spurt that staked Dayton to a 35-25 lead with 2:15 remaining in the stanza.
