Gonzaga slips past Pepperdine in 2nd half
Feb 15, 2015 - 3:17 AM Spokane, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Pangos scored 19 points and No. 3 Gonzaga won a 40th consecutive home game despite a rare off shooting night, beating Pepperdine 56-48 on Saturday.Kyle Wiltjer netted 13 points and Domantas Sabonis gave 10 off the bench for Gonzaga (26-1, 14-0 WCC), which has won 19 in a row since its lone loss of the season in Tucson to then-No.3 Arizona on Dec 6.
All but three of those 19 wins have been by double digits, with two of the three single-digit wins coming against the pesky Waves.
Gonzaga entered the contest shooting 53 percent from the field, which leads the nation and is on pace for the best shooting season since Duke finished at 53.6 percent in the 1991-92 season.
Pepperdine's stingy defense held the Bulldogs to just 41.7 percent shooting in this one, but the Waves missed all 10 of their 3-point tries in the setback.
Stacy Davis and Lamond Murray Jr. had 13 and 11 points, respectively, to lead Pepperdine (15-11, 8-7).
Davis opened the scoring with a jumper 2:10 into the game, and the Bulldogs never led in the first half.
It was 30-30 at the break, but Gonzaga got back to form after halftime. Byron Wesley and Pangos combined to score 14 of the 16 points during a 16-3 run to open the second half.
The scoring slowed down from there for the hosts, but the margin wouldn't dip back into single digits until Jeremy Major hit back-to-back jumpers inside the final minute to produce the final tally.
Gonzaga didn't score in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the game.
Game Notes
Major shot 3-for-16 from the floor and 0-for-7 from deep ... The Waves have lost 23 straight to ranked opponents ... Sabonis was the lone Gonzaga reserve to score. Three Pepperdine reserves combined for 19 points.
