Citadel hires VMI coach Baucom

Mar 30, 2015 - 9:11 PM Charleston, SC ( - Virginia Military Institute head men's basketball coach Duggar Baucom resigned Monday to accept the same position at The Citadel.

Baucom amassed a 151-159 record in 10 seasons at VMI and led the Keydets to their first postseason appearance in 37 years when the program reached the semifinals of the 2014 Tournament. VMI advanced to the title game of the Big South Conference Tournament three times during his tenure.

The 54-year-old's Keydet teams have also fielded one of the nation's most exciting offenses, having led NCAA Division I in scoring in each of the last five seasons.

"This is an exciting day for Citadel basketball," said Citadel director of athletics Jim Senter. "Duggar has a proven track record of success, not only on the court, but more importantly in building young men of character off the court."

The all-time leader in victories at VMI, Baucom posted a pair of 20-win campaigns with the Keydets. Including two seasons at Division II Tusculum, Baucom owns a 187-178 overall record as a head coach.

"VMI, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and our basketball family wish Coach Baucom only the very best for his new opportunity at The Citadel," said VMI athletics director Dr. Dave Diles. "We are appreciative of his service and contributions to the Institute and the stewardship of our basketball program."

Baucom replaces Chuck Driesell, who did not have his contract renewed following an 11-19 season in 2014-15.
