Freshman Love powers UCLA to rout of Portland State
Nov 10, 2007 - 6:50 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- A new wizard in Westwood could make it the winter of Love for UCLA.Freshman phenom Kevin Love had 22 points and 13 rebounds in his collegiate debut as the second-ranked Bruins drubbed Portland State, 69-48, on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
Josh Shipp scored 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, for the Bruins, who are coming off consecutive Final Four appearances.
"Josh Shipp played very hard. He did a very good job defensively on a great player (Portland State's Dupree Lucas)," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "He held him to zero points. I was excited to see him take on that challenge (defensively). Josh also shot the ball very well."
UCLA rolled despite being without injured point guard Darren Collison and shooting guard Michael Roll.
Point guard Collison, a Wooden Award candidate, sat out while recovering from a sprained left knee. Roll is expected to miss three to five weeks with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot.
That put the focus squarely on Love, and the reigning National high school player of the year delivered in a big way. Love was 6-of-8 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
"Kevin Love had a good game," Howland said. "He got a little winded and cramped up towards the end."
The 6-10 freshman hit his first four shots of the game, including a 3-pointer that gave the Bruins a 25-8 lead with 11:41 to play in the first half.
Love scored 13 points in the first half and Shipp added 10 on 4-for-4 shooting as the Bruins hit a sizzling 65 percent (15-of-23) from the floor to take a 36-17 lead at intermission.
Jeremiah Dominguez scored 11 points and Scott Morrison to lead the Vikings (0-1), who shot 35 percent (18-of-62) against UCLA's stingy defense.
"It was a tough game as expected," Howland said. "They were a very patient team and did not take a lot of shots. They made us work on defense, but I felt we did a good job tonight"
Lucas, the leading returning scorer for Portland State, picked up three first-half fouls and was a non-factor and wound up scoreless, missing all four shots from the field.
