Porter propels No. 13 Oregon past Pacific
Nov 12, 2007 - 6:06 AM EUGENE, Oregon (Ticker) -- Sophomore Tajuan Porter had his shooting skills on display.Porter scored 28 points and Malik Hairston chipped in 20 as 12th-ranked Oregon rolled to an 80-64 victory over Pacific on Sunday night.
At just 5-6, Porter connected on 10-of-15 shots, including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc as the Ducks have started 2-0 or better in every season since the 1997-98 campaign.
"I felt like I needed to take on the scoring load," Porter said. "They played tough defense but I really just took it upon myself to score with the help of my teammates."
"Porter got control of the game, we probably should have doubled him but we just aren't at that stage yet," Pacific coach Bob Thomason said.
With the game tied at 20-20 in the opening half, Oregon took control for good as Porter and Hairston combined for all of the points during an aggressive 14-7 burst to forge a 34-27 edge at the break.
"I felt like we shot the ball well and we made big plays at the right times," said Hairston, who grabbed six rebounds.
The Ducks (2-0) continued to create space when Porter scored on a layup and Bryce Taylor drilled a 3-pointer at the 15:07 mark in the second half, extending the lead to 48-35.
The Tigers (1-1) were never able to regroup thereafter.
Maarty Leunen collected 17 points and 10 rebounds and Taylor poured in 10 for Oregon, which shot 50 percent (29-of-57) from the field.
"(Pacific) was a tough team to defend and they moved the ball around really well," Leunen said. "Joevan (Catron) and I worked really hard to pressure the ball inside and make stops there."
Steffan Johnson led the charge for Pacific with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
