Abrams, Texas ready to open season against UTSA

Nov 12, 2007 - 3:29 PM UTSA (1-0) at No. 16 Texas (0-0) 8:00 pm EST

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) - The Texas Longhorns are ready to kick off the post-Kevin Durant era.

A.J. Abrams will hope to get No. 16 Texas off to a good start when they host Texas-San Antonio in its season opener on Monday night.

Even without Durant, the Longhorns still return a very talented backcourt, which features Abrams and D.J. Augustin.

Abrams averaged 15.5 points per game and knocked down 42 percent from the arc, while Augustin average 14.4 points and 6.7 assists per game last season.

Augustin started all 35 games last season and showed decision-making ability that is rarely seen in a freshman point guard. He will be feeding the ball to Abrams, who set a Big-12 record by making 120 3-pointers last season.

The Longhorns have won five straight over the Roadrunners, including a 100-82 triumph in 2004 in their last meeting.

UTSA guard Devin Gibson scored 20 points in a 69-47 triumph over Hardin-Simmons on Friday in their season opener. Gibson shot 6-of-10 from the field and had five steals for the Roadrunners, who forced 29 turnovers.
