Flynn looks to lead Syracuse to third straight win

Nov 16, 2007 - 3:53 PM Fordham (2-1) at No. 25 Syracuse (2-0) 7:00 pm EST

SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) - Jonny Flynn is providing Eric Devendorf with plenty of support.

Flynn and No. 25 Syracuse will look for their third straight win when the host Fordham on Friday.

The freshman point guard hit a go-ahead 3-pointer - his only field goal of the night - with 5.3 seconds left to help the Orange to a 72-69 win over St. Joseph's on Wednesday.

Prior to that shaky performance, Flynn set a school record by scoring 28 points in his debut on Monday.

Meanwhile Devendorf, who is 24 points shy of 1,000 for his career, will need Flynn to continue his strong start considering the lack of experience on Syracuse.

The Orange lost their entire frontcourt from the past two seasons and saw sharpshooter Andy Rautins go down with a knee injury over the summer.

Devendorf, who led the team in scoring (15.5) last season, is the unquestioned leader of the young squad. But it was Flynn's performance that helped clinch a spot in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Tip-off semifinals. Syracuse will play Ohio State in the semifinals on November 21 at Madison Square Garden.

However, Syracuse must focus on Fordham for the time being. The Rams had their two-game winning streak snapped by Missouri, 79-55, on Tuesday in the regional final of the O'Reilly Auto Parts/CBE Classic.

Marcus Stout and Bryant Dunston each scored 13 points apiece for Fordham, which shot just 30 percent (16-of-53).
