Gordon, Indiana look to build on solid debut

Nov 18, 2007 - 2:21 PM Longwood (2-1) at No. 8 Indiana (1-0) 12:00 pm EST

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) -- As far as college debuts go, Eric Gordon had one for the ages.

Gordon and the eighth-ranked Hoosiers aim to build on their strong starts on Sunday when they host Longwood as part of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.

One of the nation's top recruits last season, Gordon scored 33 points with six rebounds and four assists in Indiana's 99-79 win over Chattanooga on Monday in his first game as a Hoosier. It was the most points by an Indiana player in their debut, topping the 26 scored by George McGinnis on December 1, 1970.

He was 9-for-15 from the field and 7-for-11 from 3-point range, helping the Hoosiers overcome a four-point halftime deficit.

Guard Armon Bassett had 20 points and six rebounds while senior forward D.J. White had 17 points.

Longwood, which is in its inaugural season as a Division I member, is coming off an 89-67 home win over Virginia-Wise on Thursday. Junior forward Kirk Williams, who is averaging 20.3 points and 9.0 rebounds, had a career-high 29 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lancers, who will play as an independent this season, are 0-4 against ranked opponents all-time.
