Indiana's Gordon aims to keep up scoring vs. UNC Wilmington
Nov 20, 2007 - 2:45 PM UNC Wilmington (1-1) at No. 8 Indiana (2-0) 7:00 pm ESTBLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) -- Eric Gordon has been everything that Indiana has hoped for so far.
The freshman guard will look to continue his high-scoring start when the eighth-ranked Hoosiers square off with UNC Wilmington in the second round of the Chicago Invitational Challenge on Tuesday.
Widely considered one of the top recruits in the nation, Gordon has not disappointed early on, scoring 54 points in his first two collegiate games to establish a school record. The previous mark for points in a player's first two games at Indiana had been 52, set by former NBA player George McGinnis in 1970.
After setting a school record with 33 points in his debut, Gordon followed that up with 21 points in the Hoosiers' 100-49 romp over Longwood in the opening round of this tournament on Sunday.
The 6-4 guard shot 8-of-14 from the field, hitting five 3-pointers. Indiana's reigning "Mr. Basketball" has made 12 of his first 19 attempts from behind the arc (63.2 percent).
Fellow freshman Jordan Crawford scored 16 points and Armon Bassett added 14 for the Hoosiers, who have routed their first two opponents by 36.5 points.
This will be the third time that Indiana will face off with UNC Wilmington, winning the previous two. The last occurred in the second round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament, with the Hoosiers claiming a 76-67 victory en route to an appearance in the Final Four.
A 7-22 squad a year ago, the Seahawks had a solid start to the season with a win over the College of Charleston in overtime before dropping an 89-73 loss to Illinois State on Sunday.
Senior guard T.J. Carter netted 19 points on Sunday despite shooting 3-of-12 from the field.
That poor shooting was a team-wide problem for UNC Wilmington, which led Illinois State by 10 points midway through the second half before struggling from the field.
The leading scorer for the Seahawks is 6-4 guard Daniel Fountain, who is averaging 21.5 points and shooting 6-of-10 on 3-pointers.
