Top-ranked Tar Heels host winless So. Carolina State

Nov 20, 2007 - 2:58 PM So. Carolina State (0-3) at No. 1 North Carolina (2-0) 7:30 pm EST

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- South Carolina State picked a bad time to play North Carolina for the first time.

The top-ranked Tar Heels host the winless Bulldogs as part of the Las Vegas Classic on Tuesday.

North Carolina heads to Las Vegas for a game on Friday against Old Dominion.

The Tar Heels rebounded from a four-point victory over Davidson in their season opener with a 107-72 rout of Iona. Sunday's game was the first-round of this tournament.

Against the Gaels, junior forward Tyler Hansbrough had 27 points and nine rebounds, leading five UNC players in double figures.

Junior swingman Danny Green had 15 points, six rebounds and two steals in only 14 minutes. Sophomore guard Wayne Ellington had 14 points, while sophomore forward Deon Thompson and sophomore guard Ty Lawson each had 13. The Tar Heels led by as many as 28 points in the first half.

South Carolina State is still seeking its first victory for new coach Tim Carter.

The Bulldogs, who have six new players on the roster, were picked to finish seventh in the 11-team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The returning starters are senior guard Derrick Davis, Robert Baker and junior forward Julius Carter, but only Davis, who was slowed by a recurring shoulder injury in the preseason, has been in the starting lineup.

Junior Chris Miller-Williams, a reserve forward last season, leads South Carolina State in scoring (11.6 ppg) and rebounding (7.6 rpg).
