Washington State looks to begin season with ninth straight win

PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) - Coming off its biggest win of the season, sixth-ranked Washington State returns home to take on Portland State on Sunday.

The Cougars defeated No. 19 Gonzaga, 51-47, on the road on Wednesday to improve to 8-0 for the first time since the 1991-92 season. Washington State started that campaign winning its first 12 games.

It was the fourth contest this season that Washington State allowed less than 50 points, while the Cougars are shooting at just under 50 percent from the floor overall.

Veterans have powered the Cougars as seniors Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver are scoring 13.5 and 12.0 points per game, respectively. Junior Taylor Rochestie is averaging 10.9 points and 4.9 assists per contest.

The Vikings have won three straight games and are led by senior center Scott Morrison, who is averaging 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.

Portland State is coming off a 61-60 victory over Division II foe Lewis & Clark and has faced one ranked opponent this season, losing 69-48 at No. 2 UCLA on November 9.

Washington State is 5-0 all-time against Portland State, including an 83-55 victory on November 20, 2000.
