Georgetown starts fast, routs Radford

Dec 16, 2007 - 4:52 AM WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Georgetown started fast and never let up against Radford.

Freshman Austin Freeman had a season-high 21 points as the fourth-ranked Hoyas jumped all over the Highlanders en route to a 110-51 rout on Saturday.

Georgetown (8-0) made seven of its first 11 shots and opened the game on an 18-3 run in the first 4:11. The Hoyas led by at least 13 points the rest of the way en route to their highest point total since scoring 116 against Notre Dame on February 9, 2002.

"Our guys did a very good job of making the extra pass and sharing the ball," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "A lot of times when you get rolling guys think me, me, me, I have to get mine, but our guys did a very good job of making the extra pass."

Jessie Sapp's layup capped a 9-0 run that gave the Hoyas a 40-14 lead with 7:17 left in the half. They led by 24 points at the break.

Freeman, DaJuan Summers and Sapp each had 10 points in the first half as the Hoyas shot 59 percent (19-of-32) in the opening 20 minutes. Leading scorer Roy Hibbert went scoreless in the first half and also did not attempt a shot.

"Too many people look at the stat sheets and make determinations on how someone plays and that's hard to do because of how we do things, but I thought Roy was absolutely terrific," Thompson said. "I thought he was terrific particularly in the second half just with his decision-making process and the way he pursued the ball, the way he worked on the defensive end, making it hard for (Radford) to get the ball inside."

Freeman's 3-pointer capped a 13-2 spurt as the Hoyas took a 77-40 advantage with 11:21 remaining. Georgetown then went on a 14-0 run to take its largest lead at 106-47 with 4:02 left.

"They're a special team," Radford coach Brad Greenberg said. "From our standpoint it was a unique opportunity to play against guys like that, I just wish we had played better. The guys were a little disappointed that they weren't more competitive at the beginning to at least get a feel for the game, but they jumped on us so quick and made threes and we never had a chance."

Georgetown shot a blistering 71 percent in the second half (20-of-28) and outrebounded Radford, 39-24.

Summers finished with 17 points and Patrick Ewing Jr. added a season-high 15 for the Hoyas, who are off to their best start since beginning the 2003-04 campaign 10-0.

"You don't think about them in terms of speed and quickness because you marvel at how savvy and how efficient," Greenberg said. "They do have deceptive speed and quickness at a lot of positions and they're very deep."

Amir Johnson had 12 points to lead Radford (4-7), which shot 33 percent (15-of-46) and made just 4-of-23 shots from the arc.

It was Georgetown's last game before a matchup at No. 2 Memphis next Saturday.
