North Carolina ends long road trip vs. Rutgers

Dec 16, 2007 - 2:30 PM No. 1 North Carolina (8-0) at Rutgers (7-3) 8:00 pm EST

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Every coach likes to subject his team to a certain degree of adversity to prepare them for conditions they could experience in the NCAA Tournament. Roy Williams is giving his team such a test.

The top-ranked Tar Heels end a stretch of six consecutive road games on Sunday when they visit Rutgers.

North Carolina, looking for its first 9-0 start since the 1997-98 team won its first 17 games, will play its first game in 11 days after it routed Pennsylvania, 106-71, on December 4.

The Tar Heels also recorded wins over Old Dominion and BYU in the Las Vegas Invitational, followed by wins at Ohio State and Kentucky.

Williams' Tar Heels got their usual contribution from center Tyler Hansbrough, who recorded his third consecutive double-double in the rout of the Quakers with 29 points and 10 rebounds.

North Carolina will try for a ninth straight victory over Rutgers, which is 6-0 at home this season. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 65-55 win over the New Jersey Institute of Technology on Thursday in which leading scorer J.R. Inman had 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Rutgers has lost every meeting in this series since winning the first one in 1921.
