Ole Miss on the verge of history

Dec 28, 2007 - 1:58 PM Southern Miss (8-4) at No. 24 Ole Miss (11-0) 8:00 pm EST

SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi (Ticker) - Striving to win its first 12 games for the first time in school history, No. 24 Mississippi hosts in-state rival Southern Mississippi on Friday.

The Rebels, who also started 11-0 in 1936-37 and 2000-01, remained one of nine undefeated teams in the country when they handed the Clemson Tigers their first loss of the season, 85-82, in the championship game of the San Juan Shootout on Saturday.

Paramount to their win over the Tigers was their work on the offensive glass, claiming 23 offensive rebounds to Clemson's 12.

Dwayne Curtis and Chris Warren both scored 19 points to lead the Rebels, who also can establish the longest winning streak in school history with a win over the Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday with a 63-57 setback to McNeese State. The Golden Eagles, who swept through the Gulf Coast Classic from December 18-20, shot just 30 percent (19-for-62) from the field.

Jeremy Wise scored 25 points for Southern Miss in the loss.
