Villanova looks to extend record Big Five winning streak
Dec 29, 2007 - 4:07 PM La Salle (4-6) at No. 16 Villanova (9-1) 7:00 pm ESTVILLANOVA, Pennsylvania (Ticker) - No. 16 Villanova will carry a Big Five record 13-game winning streak into its game with La Salle on Saturday.
The Wildcats have won five consecutive games, including a 72-56 victory over Columbia last Saturday. Villanova will look to close out December on a winning note, having posted a 28-3 record in November and December in the last three years.
Four starters average in double figures for the Wildcats, including sophomore guard Scottie Reynolds at 16.8 points per game. Junior forward Shane Clark averages 13 points, freshman guard Corey Fisher 11.3 and junior forward Dante Cunningham 10.9 for Villanova.
The Explorers are coming off a 1-2 performance at the San Juan Shootout, ending with losses on consecutive days to Mississippi and DePaul. La Salle averaged 94 points in the three games in Puerto Rico.
Senior guard Darnell Harris leads the Explorers in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Sophomore guards Rodney Green and Ruben Guillandeaux average 12.2 and 11 points, respectively, for La Salle.
The Wildcats have won the last five meetings and nine of the last 11. The Explorers have lost four consecutive Big Five games and are 1-11 in the Big Five under coach Dr. John Giannini.
