Michigan State looking to build on momentum vs. Iowa

Jan 12, 2008 - 3:29 PM No. 6 Michigan State (14-1) at Iowa (7-9) 8:35 pm EST

IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- No. 6 Michigan State is looking to build on its first-half momentum when it begins the second half of its schedule against Iowa on Saturday.

Michigan State (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten) couldn't have asked for a better start to the season and conference play after ending 2007 with a loss to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Spartans held on for a 78-75 victory over Purdue during their last game on Tuesday to extend their current winning streak to 11 games.

Travis Walton scored just four points in the win, but his contribution couldn't have come at a better time as the junior guard hit a baseline jumper with 17 seconds to play and then added a pair of free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Walton entered the contest averaging just 3.8 points and had scored a total of 13 in his last five contests.

Iowa (7-9, 0-3) is looking to snap a three-game losing streak against Michigan State after suffering a 79-48 drubbing against Ohio State on Wednesday.

The Hawkeyes struggled to find any consistency against Ohio State, shooting less than 35 percent and committing 14 turnovers.
