Georgetown, Pittsburgh battle in huge Big East matchup

Jan 14, 2008 - 5:56 PM No. 6 Georgetown (13-1) at No. 16 Pittsburgh (14-2) 7:00 pm EST

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Two of the better teams in the Big East Conference meet Monday when sixth-ranked Georgetown visits No. 16 Pittsburgh.

The Hoyas (13-1, 3-0 Big East) extended their winning streak to five games in dramatic fashion with a 72-69 victory over Connecticut on Saturday. Roy Hibbert, a 7-2 center, provided the winning points by draining a 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining.

Hibbert scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead four players in double figures for the Hoyas, who trailed by six points with just over four minutes remaining.

Georgetown continues to rely on efficiency and its trademark defense, allowing opponents to shoot a conference-low 35 percent. The Hoyas allow just 55.9 points per game.

Pittsburgh (14-2, 2-1) won its second straight conference game, an 84-70 triumph over Seton Hall on Saturday. Sam Young scored a career-high 28 points and DeJuan Blair, a 6-7 freshman, had 20 and 14 rebounds.

The Panthers are still adjusting without two starters, point guard Levance Fields (broken foot) and small forward Mike Cook (knee). Fields may return late in the season but Cook's college career is likely over.

The Hoyas and the Panthers met three times last season, including once in the conference tournament. Georgetown prevailed in two of the three meetings.
