Indiana takes on Minnesota looking to extend win streak

Jan 17, 2008 - 2:42 PM No. 10 Indiana (14-1) at Minnesota (12-3) 9:00 pm EST

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) - No. 10 Indiana looks to extend its longest winning streak in nearly 15 years when it visits Minnesota on Thursday in a Big Ten Conference game.

Indiana (14-1, 3-0 Big Ten) has won 10 consecutive games, its longest streak since a 13-game run during the 1992-93 season.

The Hoosiers also have won their first three Big Ten contests for the first time since starting 4-0 during the 2001-02 campaign when they lost to Maryland in the national championship game.

Indiana, which also has won 27 in a row at home, extended its overall winning streak on Sunday, posting a 62-58 victory against Illinois.

Freshman Eric Gordon, who had originally committed to Illinois before pulling back his verbal agreement to sign a letter of intent with Indiana, scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half and leads the Big Ten in scoring at 23.0 points per game.

Minnesota (12-3, 2-1) won its second straight game Saturday, a 76-73 triumph over Penn State.

Golden Gophers coach Tubby Smith is within one win of 400 in his career. Smith, who has spent parts of 17 seasons with Tulsa, Georgia and Kentucky, has Minnesota off to its best start since 2004-05 when it finished 21-11, earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Smith would become the 21st active coach to reach the 400-win plateau, joining, among others, long-time friend and Indiana coach Kelvin Sampson, who is 490-269 in 25 seasons.
