Freshmen in spotlight when USC faces No. 4 UCLA

Jan 19, 2008 - 2:00 PM USC (10-6) at No. 4 UCLA (16-1) 3:30 pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Kevin Love of UCLA and O.J. Mayo of Southern California are two of the country's premier freshmen.

Love and Mayo square off for the first time on Saturday when the fourth-ranked Bruins host the Trojans in a Pac-10 game.

Love leads UCLA (16-1, 4-0 Pac-10) in scoring (16.8 points) and rebounding (10.2). "It's going to be a fun matchup," UCLA junior guard Darren Collison said.

Mayo leads the Trojans (10-6, 1-3) in scoring at 19.9 points per game. USC has no seniors and only three juniors, none of whom are starters. Freshmen have accounted for 51.3 percent of the team's points. The freshmen and sophomores have accounted for 96.1 percent of the scoring.

"We're a very good team and they got a lot of promise on their team," Love said.

The question is how long the duo will be in college as both could leave at season's end for the NBA draft. Love has eight double-doubles this season. Mayo is capable of more offense, scoring 32 points in his collegiate debut before a 34-point effort against California.

The Bruins have won five of the last six meetings between the teams.
