Injury-riddled backcourt no problem for No. 16 Pittsburgh

Jan 19, 2008 - 2:11 PM No. 16 Pittsburgh (15-2) at Cincinnati (8-9) 4:00 pm EST

CINCINNATI (Ticker) - When the season started, Pittsburgh seniors Ronald Ramon and Keith Benjamin were little more than support players.

No. 16 Pittsburgh seeks its third straight win when it hosts Cincinnati in a Big East Conference matchup Saturday.

Injuries to starters Mike Cook (ACL) and Levance Fields (broken foot) appeared to have doomed the Panthers (15-2, 3-1 Big East), but Ramon and Benjamin have stepped up. They each scored 18 points in Monday's 69-60 victory over No. 6 Georgetown.

"Teams felt like they had a better chance of beating us when we went down a few guys, but we knew we would come out stronger, and we've been proving it since they went down," Ramon said.

Junior forward Sam Young is averaging 17.9 points, while freshman forward DeJuan Blair is averaging 12.4 points and 9.8 rebounds for Pittsburgh.

The Bearcats (8-9, 3-2) are coming off a 91-74 loss at Notre Dame on Tuesday. Cincinnati is 15th in the 16-team conference with a scoring average of 65.9 points.

Sophomore guard Deonta Vaughn averages 16.9 points for the Bearcats, who are 0-2 against the Panthers since joining the Big East.
