Georgetown looks to stay atop Big East

Jan 21, 2008 - 2:09 PM Syracuse (13-6) at No. 6 Georgetown (14-2) 7:00 pm EST

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Georgetown used its trademark stifling defense and efficient offense on Saturday to remain atop the Big East Conference. Syracuse, meanwhile, has fallen off the pace after a quick start.

The sixth-ranked Hoyas look to extend the misery of the Orange when the teams meet in a Big East showdown on Monday.

Georgetown (14-2, 4-1) shot 53 percent (28-of-53) from the field and held Notre Dame to a season-low 33 percent (20-for-61) shooting en route to an 84-65 win on Saturday. The Hoyas showed the Fighting Irish why they lead the Big East in shooting and field goal defense.

Senior center Roy Hibbert scored 21 points and sophomore forward DaJuan Summers added 17 points and 11 rebounds to help Georgetown rebound from last Monday's 69-60 loss to Pittsburgh.

After a solid 12-3 start, Syracuse (13-6, 3-3) has dropped three of four contests, including an 81-71 loss to Villanova on Saturday. In those three conference defeats, the Orange have shot 23 percent (10-of-44) from the arc.

In the loss to Villanova, freshman guard Johnny Flynn scored 23 points, his sixth game with at least 20 points.
