Tennessee seeks 12th consecutive win

Jan 22, 2008 - 4:44 PM No. 5 Tennessee (16-1) at Kentucky (7-9) 9:00 pm EST

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (Ticker) -- No. 5 Tennessee looks to extend its winning streak to 12 games on Tuesday, when it visits Southeastern Conference rival Kentucky.

The Volunteers (16-1, 3-0 SEC) are coming off a 74-69 victory over Ohio State on Saturday in a rematch of an NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16" game from last season.

Tennessee, whose only loss came against Texas in November, has matched its best start since 2000-01.

The Volunteers have three starters averaging double figures, led by senior guard JaJuan Smith at 14.8 points per game. Senior guard Chris Lofton averages 13.4 points and sophomore forward Tyler Smith contributes 13.3.

Struggling under first-year coach Billy Gillespie, Kentucky (7-9, 1-2) has been a model of inconsistency all season. The Wildcats are 2-4 in their last six games and have dropped consecutive SEC games on the road to Mississippi and two-time defending national champion Florida.

Despite its problems, Kentucky has three players averaging over 16 points per game: Patrick Patterson (16.6 and 8.0rpg), Joe Crawford (16.4) and Ramel Bradley (16.1).

The teams split two games last year, each winning at home. Kentucky leads the all-time series, 139-64.
