No. 21 Pittsburgh out to avenge loss to Villanova

Jan 30, 2008 - 4:12 PM Villanova (13-5) at No. 21 Pittsburgh (16-4) 7:00 pm EST

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- No. 21 Pittsburgh looks to avenge one of its Big East Conference losses on Wednesday when it hosts Villanova.

Pittsburgh (16-4, 4-3 Big East) suffered a 64-63 defeat at Villanova on January 6 as the Wildcats' Dante Cunningham hit two free throws with 10 seconds remaining. The Panthers, however, have won 40 of their last 48 Big East games at home.

Pittsburgh is 5-3 since losing starters Mike Cook (torn ACL) and Levance Fields (fractured left foot). Fields could return by the end of the season.

The Panthers hope to avoid losing two straight at home, having dropped a surprising 77-64 decision to Rutgers on Saturday.

Junior forward Sam Young is averaging 18.3 points and 6.9 rebounds, while freshman center DeJuan Blair contributes 11.9 points and 9.3 rebounds for the Panthers.

Villanova (13-5, 3-4) is looking to snap a two-game losing streak after falling to Rutgers and Notre Dame last week. It has not dropped three in row since a five-game slide from February 21 to March 6, 2004.

Sophomore guard Scottie Reynolds is averaging 17.2 points per game for the Wildcats, who are just 3-4 in their last seven contests.

"We can get better and I think we will," Wildcats' coach Jay Wright said.

Villanova leads the all-time series, 30-26, although the Panthers have won six of the last 10 meetings.
