Marquette looks for third consecutive victory

Feb 20, 2008 - 2:04 PM No. 24 Marquette (18-6) at St John's (10-14) 7:00 pm EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) - St. John's will need to break out off an offensive slump in order to avoid a loss to No. 24 Marquette in a Big East Conference game on Wednesday.

The Red Storm (10-14, 8-9) have averaged only 42.5 points in their last two games, losses to Cincinnati and Villanova. The Golden Eagles (18-6, 8-5), who hold an 8-5 lead in the all-time series, face St. John's only once this season.

Marquette has rebounded from a pair of losses with victories over Seton Hall and Pittsburgh. Freshman freshman Trevor Mbakwe, originally expected to be out for the season after knee surgery in November, played eight minutes against the Panthers.

The Golden Eagles are led by sophomore forward Lazar Hayward (13.6 points per game) and junior guard Jerel McNeal (13.1 PPG).

The Red Storm is led by junior forward Anthony Mason Jr., who averages 13.4 points, and freshman forward Justin Burrell (11.7 PPG).

Mason returned from a three-game absence due to a left ankle contusion and had 12 points and nine rebounds against the Wildcats.
