Notre Dame continues quest for Big East title

Feb 21, 2008 - 2:35 PM Pittsburgh (19-6) at No. 21 Notre Dame (19-5) 7:00 pm EST

SOUTH BEND, Indiana (Ticker) - Notre Dame's quest for a Big East title won't get any easier on Thursday when they host Pittsburgh.

After having a five-game win streak snapped on February 13, 21st-ranked Notre Dame (19-5, 9-3 Big East) bounced back with a 71-68 victory over Rutgers on Sunday to stay within one game of first place in the conference, currently shared by No. 11 Georgetown and No. 23 Louisville.

Rob Kurz scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help pick up the offense for Luke Harangody, who was limited to just 10 points and eight rebounds against Rutgers.

Kurz and Harangody have been a lethal duo in the low post for the Fighting Irish this season, combining to average nearly 32 points and 18 rebounds per game.

The two bigmen need to step up on Thursday if Notre Dame is going to avoid its sixth consecutive loss and third straight home setback to Pittsburgh.

The Panthers (19-6, 7-5) had a two-game win streak come to end on Friday, suffering a 72-54 drubbing against Marquette.

The loss spoiled the return of Pittsburgh guard Levance Fields, who had missed 12 games with a broken left foot. The junior played 20 minutes and scored just four points on 1-of-7 shooting.
