Saint Mary's locks up Bennett with extension

Nov 16, 2017 - 6:04 PM Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett received a long-term extension through the 2026-27 season, the school announced Friday.

Bennett begins his 17th season at the school when the Gaels host Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday.

Saint Mary's won 29 games in each of the past two seasons. Bennett, 55, owns a 362-156 record and made six NCAA tournament appearances over his previous 16 seasons.

"Randy represents what Saint Mary's College is all about. He exemplifies the college's ongoing commitment to the development of our student-athletes," Saint Mary's president James Donahue said in a statement. "He is not only a remarkable coach, but he is a valued and respected leader on our campus. We are excited to have him committed to this long-term agreement."

The Gaels won 20 or more games in each of the past 10 seasons and have another strong team this year. Saint Mary's is ranked 22nd nationally entering its opener.

"I'm appreciative and thankful to President Donahue, (athletic director) Mike Matoso and the Saint Mary's administration for their support," Bennett said in a statement. "It's an honor to have this opportunity to work at such a great institution."
