Syracuse seeking crucial win against Marquette

Mar 8, 2008 - 2:10 PM No. 20 Marquette (22-7) at Syracuse (18-12) 4:00 pm EST

SYRACUSE, New York (Ticker) - Syracuse needs a big win to impress the NCAA Tournament selection committee.

Syracuse has a chance to improve its resume Saturday when it hosts No. 20 Marquette the Big East regular-season finale for each team.

The Orange (18-12, 8-9) snapped a three-game losing streak with an 85-73 victory over Seton Hall on Wednesday. Donte Greene had 19 points and 13 rebounds against Seton Hall, leading three players with double-doubles and five in double figures.

Despite the win, Syracuse has lost five of its last seven games and is just 5-7 over its last 12 contests. However, five of those losses have come against teams ranked in the top 25, including No. 10 Georgetown, No. 13 Louisville, No. 14 Connecticut, No. 19 Notre Dame and then-No. 21 Villanova.

Marquette (22-7, 11-6) bounced back from a two-point overtime loss to Georgetown last Saturday with a 67-37 triumph over Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday. Lazar Hayward scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles.

With a win on Saturday, Marquette can lock up the No. 5 seed in the Big East Tournament.
