Washington State trying to clinch third place in Pac-10

Mar 8, 2008 - 2:30 PM Washington (16-14) at No. 22 Washington St (22-7) 7:30 pm EST

PULLMAN, Washington (Ticker) - No. 22 Washington State closes out its regular season schedule on Saturday against rival Washington in a Pac-10 Conference matchup.

The Cougars (22-7, 10-7) opened the campaign with 14 consecutive wins before suffering their first loss to then-No. 5 UCLA, 81-74, on January 12.

However, Washington State enters Saturday's contest in a tie for third place in the conference with Southern California after suffering a pair of losses in its previous three games, including a 60-53 setback to then-No. 8 Stanford last Saturday. The Cougars made just 4-of-15 3-pointers and shot just 40 percent from the field.

Washington (16-14, 7-10) snapped a two-game losing streak with a narrow 87-84 victory over California last Saturday. Joe Wolfinger scored 17 points, making all four of his attempts from 3-point range.

Wolfinger helped pick up the offense for leading-scorer Jon Brockman, who tied a season-low with just 10 points against California. Brockman is Washington's leading scorer at 17.6 points and leads the Pac-10 in rebounding, averaging 11.6 boards per game.
