Davidson seeks another Southern crown

Mar 10, 2008 - 5:22 PM Elon (14-18) vs. No. 25 Davidson (25-6) 9:00 pm EDT

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Davidson aims for its third straight NCAA Tournament berth on Monday when it faces upstart Elon in the Southern Conference championship game.

The 25th-ranked Wildcats (25-6) cruised into the title game with an 82-52 rout of North Carolina Greensboro in Saturday's semifinals.

Davidson won its 35th consecutive contest against a conference opponent and stretched the nation's longest current winning streak to 21 games.

The Wildcats are led by Stephen Curry, the son of former NBA player Dell Curry. He scored 26 points against UNC Greensboro to pace three players in double figures.

Curry, the conference Player of the Year, ranks fifth nationally in scoring at 25.2 points per game.

Davidson is looking to become the first Southern Conference team to win three straight league tournament titles since Chattanooga accomplished the feat from 1993-95.

The Wildcats are seeking their 10th league crown overall and fifth under coach Bob McKillop.

Davidson is a heavy favorite against seventh-seed Elon (14-18), which is the lowest seed to reach the title contest since Virginia Military Institute advanced to the final as a No. 7 seed in 1988.

VMI also was the last team to play in the conference title clash with a losing record.

Elon, which will be playing its fourth game in the tournament, defeated No. 6 seed and host College of Charleston, 75-61, in the semifinals. The Phoenix upset No. 2 seed Chattanooga in the quarterfinals.
